Welcome to the Fall 2010 edition of the Turkey Red Journal. In this issue, we have coverage of a number of natural dye conferences. Ruth Baldwin, the committee organizer of the second annual Earth's Palette Conference, has shared with us the events of this two-day conference. The Earth's Palette Conference is underwritten by the Mountain and Valley Wool Association. We are all very thankful for their continued support.
From Sweden, Carla Sundström has written about the 14th International Fungi & Fibre Symposium 2010. She has contributed some beautiful pictures of the event. The Textile Society of America 2010 Biennial Symposium is covered by Heather Clark Hilliard. The title of this year's conference was "Global Color." Both Dr. Domique Cardon, author of Natural Dyes, and Elena Phipps, author of Cochineal Red: The Art History of a Color, gave lectures and workshops.
Ilsa Perse has written delightful account of her experiences in India Flint's class titled "A Walk in the Woods," which took place this past spring at Shakerag in Tennessee. Elizabeth Smith attended the popular Maiwa summer workshops in Vancouver, learning new techniques in indigo dyeing.
John Marshall, a regular contributor to the TRJ, shares with us the history and methods of kyoukechi dyeing, in which carved wooden panels are used to create intricate patterns on cloth. Cindy Gimbert, with her extensive travels in Peru, has written about the weavers of Chinchero and the movement to bringing back ancient Andean natural dye techniques. Lydia Brockman, a recent graduate student from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, writes about her research on printing techniques, using different mordants and modifiers.
In a tribute to the late Miriam C. Rice, Dorothy M. Beebee writes a letter about her experiences with her life-long friend. Dorothy was the illustrator of Miriam's well-known books on mushroom dyeing. I was fortunate to meet Dorothy this year at the Earth's Palette Conference and learn about their wonderful collaboration.
In upcoming events, another interesting conference, The International Symposium and Exhibition on Natural Dyes and Colorants (ISEND) 2011 Europe will take place in La Rochelle, France, April 25 to 30, 2011. More information is available at http://www.isend2011.com/.
