Turkey Red Journal
Dear Readers:
Welcome to the Spring 2008 edition of the Turkey Red Journal. This is the third online edition and our readership has continued to expand in an international scope. In this edition, John Marshall, a regular contributor to the Turkey Red Journal, has generously shared his knowledge of painting with indigo, a technique he has mastered beautifully. Abi Chodosh, a natural dyer and educator, writes about her method of "Falling Leaf Shibori." For those of you who are interested in growing your own dyes, Ruth Cadoret and Rhoda Braunschweig explain how to grow and dye with fresh Japanese indigo. From Australia, Alison Morton, reviews Dominique Cardon's new book, Natural Dyes: Sources, Tradition, Technology and Science. In the gallery section, we see the latest work of Taniya Vaidya, from India. Taniya wrote about her work in Spring 2005 issue of the journal. Since then she has been studying with a master dyer in India and spent last fall and winter studying contemporary painting in Paris.
The exhibition Blue opens at the Textile Museum, in Washington D.C. on April 4, 2008. Hiroyuki Shindo, a Japanese artist, who was interviewed in the Winter '01 edition of the journal, will be one of the artists exhibiting his work. See the Events section of this issue for more information about this exhibit.
On a personal note, I have been busy this winter finishing research for the Level II of the Certificate of Excellence in Dyeing, sponsored by Handweavers Guild of America. I am pleased that my study, "Over-Dyeing and Under-Dyeing with Indigofera tinctoria," successfully passed the examination. For those of you who are not familiar with the Handweavers Guild COE in Dyeing, it is a self-study program that aims to assist individuals in evaluating and increasing their skills. In the next issue of the Turkey Red Journal there will be an article about the COE in Dyeing written by Sandra Swarbrick, COE Program Chair.
