Welcome to the Spring 2012 edition of the Turkey Red Journal. We were very fortunate to have the Turkey Red Journal included in the New York Times Home Section, April 5th article, Colors of the Caldron, by Michael Tortorello. The article covers the many different approaches natural dyers use to create and grow color. Inspired by this article, I am asking natural dye gardeners from all over the world to share with us your experiences. Are you an urban or rural gardener? What dye plants have you found successful in your area? Interested readers should email me at madder@comcast.net for the particulars of what to write and submit.

In this edition, Dr. Glenna Dean, along with her students, Donna Brown, Diane DeSouza, and Deb McClintock, has written the article Adventurers with Lichen Dyes. This collaborative research grew out of a class Glenna taught at the 2011 Taos Wool Festival. Glenna’s earlier article, Introduction to Common New Mexico Dye Lichens, is available in the archived Volume 15, Issue 1 of the Turkey Red Journal.

Diana McPherson’s article, An antipodean dyer at ISEND, describes her research and demonstration presented at the International Symposium and Exhibition on Natural Dyes, 2011, in in La Rochelle, France. Master Dyer Michel Garcia’s new DVD, Natural Dye Workshop with Michel Garcia Colors of Provence Using Sustainable Methods, is reviewed by Rebeca Schiller.

In her recent trip to Southeast Asia, Judith Musick visited Ock Pop Tok, a company that promotes the development of Lao weavers and dyers. Her article, On the natural dye trail: a few days in Luang Prabang, Laos, describes the beautiful colors created by this craft center.

Articles, artwork, exhibit notices and reviews for the next issue of the TRJ will be due August 1, 2012. We are interested in featuring dyers from around the world. Don't hesitate to submit your ideas for articles. Send your submissions to madder@comcast.net.
