Turkey Red Journal
Welcome to the first on-line issue of the Turkey Red Journal. For those of you who are new readers, I would like to share with you a bit of its history. The Turkey Red Journal was started in the spring of 1995, in Chicago, Illinois, after a number of local dyers had formed a natural dye study group. With the upcoming Nature’s Dyes Conference, in Fort Collins, Colorado, the focus was to create a venue for natural dyers from all over the world to be able to share ideas and information. Since that time, 30 issues have been printed, sent out to over a hundred and twenty subscribers, with artists all over the world sharing their work and knowledge with the readers.
One of my goals for the Turkey Red Journal is to reach a wider international community. I have decided to put the TRJ online in the hopes that more readers will have access to the articles and will be able to share information and comments within the contexts of this website. The new content will be posted twice a year.
I am very excited about this new online site. For the readers who like to have a hard copy, all of the articles can be downloaded and printed. A new addition to the TRJ is the comment section. Here readers will be able to post comments, ask or answer a question and share information about upcoming events. The Nature’s Gallery will continue to feature artists working in natural dyes. In addition, there will be a section presenting the work of students learning natural dye processes. Future issues of the website will have an archive section, where earlier online articles can be accessed. Earlier hard-copy issues of the TRJ will be available for purchase until the supply runs out. This issue, Volume 12, Issue 2, focuses on small, women-owned businesses that carry natural dye products and sponsor natural dye classes. In addition, two natural dye artists, one from the United States and one from India, share their experiences at the International Symposium on Natural Dyes, held this past fall in Hyderabad, India.
For those of you who are interested in contributing articles or images for the next online issue, the deadline is June 1, 2007. Please send your request to pfeldman1@saic.edu. I hope you enjoy this new format and will share this site with other dyers.
